Why Socrates Moved To NYC
Many people always ask me “Soc why did you move to NYC”? and I always reply in saying that there is no way I can sum it up in few words. But I figured I would elaborate since I have this great forum we call Blogging:
After college, I knew I wanted to venture into the world and test the waters so to speak. I studied a normal major [Business Management] but also minored in Music History and took a keen liking to reading philosophical manuscripts. So in other words, I was sort of a Nerd. But music was always my passion since I was in high school. Also, I remember seeing my mom play and noticing how she was so effin good at it and wondered how I could become great at an artistic expression just like my mom and other highly talented people I’ve encountered. So after college I obtained a pretty decent 9 to 5 and after putting in a little time there, I asked to be transferred {out of the BLUE). Ironically, my job was in a transition period and a transfer to the northeast was part of this transition. After that, in 2 weeks I packed up my stuff and hauled tail to NYC in a drop top spyder eclipse [no lie]. Now I knew it would be hard to maintain the life I had in Dallas when I got to NYC but I was willing to make that sacrifice. And no LIE I struggled my butt off trying to maintain but all of sudden I got one break. I met this really nice lady who worked at a cool restaurant called “Dos Caminos” and after chatting it up, she took me there. I noticed that they were playing instrumental music as people ate, drank etc. So I asked where they chose their music selection and found out that they randomly bought cd’s, disc, and sometimes had live musicians play etc. Later that week, I went back to Dos Caminos and spoke with the manager…after a 10 minute proposal I convinced her to allow me to provide music which would be played while customers dined [literally I put various songs on cd and brought them to her every other week or so to play]. This was not at high paying placement but it was definitely a start. After that, I got my music into elevators of NYC skyscrapers…until finally I met a well known upcoming producer who gave me my first shot to provide production consulting for him and his projects. This led into indie film score music which led into network television which finally led into working with many nice and talented artist.
Now I’m no famous producer by any means but I have had the privilege of meeting and being an apprentice to some great musical entities. I’ve also opened a gate way to my writings in which I’ve been published multiple times for poems and short stories I’ve written…and even was honored as one of the cities upcoming writers from an international poetry associations. And I’m very humbled when I meet people who truly appreciate anything I do whether its music, writing or speaking. This move and experience has taught me so much from a cultural perspective and in the process I’ve learned more about myself. NYC breathes and speaks to you without the wind blowing or without sound and that kind of positive energy is why I came here. I always said that if everything went bad, I could always move back to Dallas, TX…the best thing about that is my hometown is truly a beautiful place and very upcoming so anytime I get the opportunity, I show love to Dallas, TX :).
